Almost finished moving in

During the past week this place has gone from a couple of rooms with our stuff piled in to somewhere we can sit and watch TV while eating our tea. The BT man came to put a phoneline in, I’ve moved most of my contact details for all the banks and places to this address. I even have my fishtank set up (minus the fish, the water needs time to settle first). The only thing missing is my ADSL, I have to wait until sometime next week for them to begin moving that.

And I have no money left. It’s all gone, spent it on “stuff” – everything from a giant TV aerial, plants, washing machine pipes, pots, pans, lightbulbs, and a rather nice stand to put my fishtank on. Fortunately the first installment of my student loan comes on Monday and I’ll also be applying for the training bursary. Once those payments start coming in I can begin to predict how much money I won’t have at the end of each month.

I can’t decide which I want more – an XBox 360 or a Freeview box with HDD. Having watched Freeview I could quite happily live without the ability to timeshift and record things, it’s repeated so much anyway that missing a program isn’t a big deal. Then again, I have six games consoles already, surely another one won’t make a difference (but this one plays pretty images when playing music! it has more modern games! I won’t have to power up my PC to listen to music! etc… etc…).

The washing machine leaks from its waste hose where I attempted to connect it back together and the Freeview signal isn’t great, it drops out every so often. Never mind, this is the beginning.

Painting

Yes, it’s another day of pointless painting. My door has been removed and the wood around the frame primed for repainting. Why they couldn’t have stained the doors and painted the frames at the same time then fit them when dry is beyond me. Maybe it’s easier to take the doors off twice.

They’re also staining some wood around our gas tank despite it already having stain on it, and the stain being the kind of stuff that doesn’t look any different if a second coat is applied.

Fortunately I’m off for the day away from this pointless crazyness.

Supposedly I’m getting a bed for my new house sometime this week. This will be good, the rest of the house is done and just needs people living in it. Oh, and some fish. Although now I’ve got the tank filled and the water settled, I want to move it onto a better platform. It’s standing where the fireplace used to be so instead of sitting on a small platform of wood it might look better if I built a bigger one the size of the hearth. I’ll have a look when I go back.

Moving in

It’s fortunate this new place is only ten minutes away from my parents otherwise we’d have to hire a van. Driving up the road and back is getting a bit boring now.

I also had a rather confusing conversation with the gas and electric company. They took me on as one of their gas customers without a problem, but then got very confused when I asked about electricity. They couldn’t find us on their system… yes, the same system that says we’re a gas customer of theirs. Eventually, after reading out my meter’s serial number they found us.

The electricity is on a card meter meaning I need to put money on a swipe card then poke it in the meter. The meter shows how much money is left (32p) and is a good way to make turning electrical things on an undesireable hobby. The meter has to go, and in September it will supposedly.

Oh, and there’s no phone line. Well, there’s a wire but it’s been cut off (literally, it’s hanging down the wall outside and has bare ends waving about in the breeze) and there’s no socket inside. BT will have fun with that I’m sure. They can sort that out also in September.

And I have no bed.

There is a large fishtank full of water though. After sitting unused in the garage for four years I’m quite surprised the water is still in the tank and not all over the floor.
